Camille Erickson, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Mar 4, 2021

CASPER — A new piece of legislation could give coal-fired power plants a lifeline. Filed on Friday in Wyoming’s Legislature, House Bill 155 would require state regulators to consider how a coal or natural gas power plant closure could affect the reliability of the power grid before approving its retirement. Prior to giving a utility a green light to retire an aging power plant unit, the Wyoming Public Service Commission — the state agency regulating certain utilities in Wyoming — would have to consider if the closure would increase the risk of...

  • Mines combat COVID-19; trona firms launch health campaign to combat virus spread

CASPER – Leaders of Wyoming’s largest trona mines have banded together to launch a public health campaign for Sweetwater County to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and keep businesses open. Wyoming’s trona patch in the southwest part of the state employs upward of 2,300 workers across four mines. But the rapid spread of the virus throughout the county has complicated some operations. Back in early April, several mineral operators took steps to prevent the virus from entering the plants and mines. They required strict social dista...

CASPER — There’s a new organization in town, and it’s been making the rounds in the Wyoming Legislature’s interim committee meetings. Meet Powering Up Wyoming. The group describes itself as a grassroots organization promoting the use of an “all of the above energy strategy” to prepare the state for an uncertain economic future. The team lobbies for some relative newcomers to the energy landscape here: wind and solar energy, as well as storage technology. Last week, the organization announced it had formed an inaugural advisory board of director...

CASPER — In a win for Wyoming’s oil and gas industry, a federal court overturned on Thursday a rule limiting the amount of methane and other pollutants emitted during natural gas production on public and tribal lands. The final ruling has been a long time coming. Back in 2016, the state of Wyoming, along with other energy-dependent states, was set on challenging new federal restrictions on methane emissions adopted during the Obama administration. The groups called the regulations overreaching and harmful. So they challenged the rule — known as...

  • Officials faced with 'structural decline' in coal

Camille Erickson, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jun 25, 2020

CASPER — Since peaking in 2008, coal production nationwide has been on a precipitous decline. Last year, U.S. production volumes reached their lowest since 1975, according to an analysis released Thursday by the Energy Information Administration. A decade ago, in the heydays of the Powder River Basin, Wyoming’s coal epicenter produced over 400 million tons of the commodity. Last year, the basin’s mines pumped out much less, just 267 million tons. Most Wyoming lawmakers and industry leaders have come around to admitting there’s a problem...

  • Barrasso seeks prince's help

Nick Reynolds and Camille Erickson, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Mar 26, 2020

CASPER — Sen. John Barrasso joined several U.S. officials in drafting a letter to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, urging him to stabilize increasingly volatile global oil markets. Sent to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday, the letter referenced the coronavirus pandemic and depressed oil prices caused by Saudi Arabia’s current spat with Russian producers. The dispute over oil has hit the U.S., the world’s leading shale producer, particularly hard. A copy of the letter was obtained by the Star-Tribune. “Senior Saudi governmen...
