Proving ground for a pack of Wolves

By Mary Hunt

The Moorcroft Wolves opened the 2019 Spring Track and Field season at the Chadron High School Invite. The meet was held indoors and we were thankful to have gotten an opportunity to run.

Taking into consideration the rough start to the track season, the inability to run on our track or use our gym, the Wolves proved to be a very worthy opponent.  There was not only a show of strength and power, but there was a promise of good things to come for the Lady Wolves.

This is the year with the greatest number of female track athletes, but also the year with the least number of male athletes.

Grayson Osmon was the lone male Wolf to compete in Chadron. He ran the 55 meter dash in 7.09 seconds, taking fifth place.  Mr. Osmon then flexed his muscle in the 200 meter dash as he won the race with a time of 24.78 seconds. Grayson also placed fifth in the long jump with a jump of 18' 1.25".

The Lady Wolves performed well in the 55 meter dash, but did not place any sprinters.  In the 200 meter dash, they proved tough and took ninth, tenth and 11th places.

There were some impressive sprint shows for the Lady Wolves. We have a nice number of freshman girls who will be a tough bunch to beat as the season progresses.

Hailey Jones ran away with the 400 meter sprint, winning the race with a time of 1:02.42; Kaylee Terry took seventh place with a time of 1:08.79; and Jordan took tenth place with a time of 1:10.29.

In the 800 meter run, Hailey took first place again with a time of 2:28.13; and Kaylee took third place with a time of 2:48.98.

In the distance races, Amasa Gerstner finished 15th place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 8. In the 3200 meter run, Jordan Jones took second place with a time of 12:24.93; and Elizabeth Anderson earned points with a seventh place finish with a time of 18:04.08.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Char Cranston scored a fourth place finish with a time of 10.28; and Kennedy Sheehan scored seventh place points with a time of 10.52.

The 4x160 relay (aka 4x1 lap), the team of Amanda Otto, Marla Sproul, Grace Breaux and April Miller took fifth place with a time of 1;58.78; and the team of Tianne Fishbach, Layla Elliott, Kennedy Sheehan and Char Cranston took seventh place with a time of 2:01..80. Hand-offs were clean and quick.  I am happy with the performance of these relay teams.

In the triple jump, Marla Sproul placed ninth with a hop, skip and a jump of 24'5" and Tianne Fischbach took tenth place with a jump of 23'11.5".

All in all, this was a wonderful opportunity for the Wolves to get their paws wet for track. There is a lot of work yet to be done, rough spots to be buffed and polished, hand-offs to become flawless, block starts to be smooth as glass and marks to be on point, but this team is proving to be a tough pack of Wolves.

Next, the Wolves will go to Casper on Friday March, 22nd for the Natrona Invite.
