Ready for action

Fall games are afoot and the coaches of football, volleyball and golf are bringing their teams front and center in this season’s preview.

Volleyball

Volleyball is again under the capable reins of head coach Katie Williams who says, “We are looking forward to a strong season. We have a young team this year with two seniors and a big freshman group joining us, 22 athletes who are working hard every day and making strides early in the season.”

“We have set some team and individual goals for the season and plan on working to meet them. This team is unlike any other team I have coached. We are very well rounded, and many of the athletes can play multiple positions, which will be fun for us to try out all of our options at the beginning of the season. I believe that this team will have a winning season with our work ethic and our preparation.”

The first volleyball competition is the Custer Tourney on Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31, 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. respectively.

Football

Travis Santisteven is leading the football athletes as head coach this season and speaks highly of the coming season: “The 2019 Wolves have more athletes on the field than last season with 26 players participating. With these numbers, the coaching staff is excited to be able to scrimmage a little more than was possible last year.”

“The biggest issue facing the Wolves this fall will be the depth. They have a solid core of returning players but the biggest class is our freshmen. Those young athletes will be expected to step up and play some vital roles in this upcoming season making for a challenging season. However, the advantage the Wolves will have is returning some of their key players on the both sides of the ball. The Wolves are excited to get the season started and see what lies ahead of them.”

The first football competition will be Friday, August 30 at Wright.

Golf

Newly hired teacher Arlie Hulm has 20 years experience coaching basketball, football, volleyball, track and other sports under his belt and is excited about the boys and girls golf teams with whom he is currently working: “We have five kids out right now, two boys and three girls with the boys most experienced and the girls doing a good job so we have everything from beginning to experienced golfers.”

In their first game, a couple of weeks ago, “One boy was in the top five and one of the girls was in the top ten and everybody either was where we thought they should be or surpassed where we were expecting them to be. We are excited for the year.”

While the fall golf season has already begun, the next game will be in Wright on Saturday, August 30.
