Students remember our soldiers

The Moorcroft K8 and High School each offered veterans ceremonies of recognition and commendation Monday morning before classes.

As the MHS assembly began, the band and choir played “From Sea to Shining Sea” and “Flander’s Field”.

Then, after guests were seated, the students welcomed veterans Dick Claar of the First Air Cav in the Viet Nam conflict, Kenny Byrne of the US Army and Dan Pullen of the US Navy who served on the aircraft carriers Enterprise, Saratoga and America; each shared with the audience a bit of their experience when they were active duty military.

D-Day was commemorated and the origin of “Taps”, the haunting melody played at day’s end in the military as well as at soldiers’ funerals, was explained to an interested crowd.

The high school ceremony was followed by a concert at the MK8 with an audience of over 200. The kids sang loud and with joy as they honored all veterans, those present and those only in the memory of their family and friends who have not forgotten.
