Lady Wolves win Powder River Conference

On Friday, the Moorcroft Lady Wolves took on the Sundance Bulldogs. Junior Varsity was first up with half a game.

The Wolves got out to a quick start and took a 9-5 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was a different story as the Wolves fell behind and were behind 17-11 when the second quarter ended.

Coach Hulm felt it was a tale of two different quarters where we did some really good things and then areas that can be improved on in the other quarter. This was the last game of the season and Coach Hulm was very proud of how far the girls have come since the first day of practice to where they are now.

He’s excited to see with the time that they put in during the off season and what they can produce next season. He commented that it really was a joy coaching this team.

The Lady Wolves Varsity was up next versus Sundance. Neither team could gain much distance as the Wolves held a 30-23 lead at the halfway point. I thought we did some really good things in the first half and our tempo was good.

The second half was similar to the first, but did see the Bulldogs pull to within three early in the fourth quarter. The Wolves were able to get some key stops on the defensive end and convert layups on the offensive end.

The game ended with the Wolves winning, 57-45. The win clinched the Wolves their first Powder River Conference Championship since 2006.

It was a great win for us and allowed us to do something that hasn’t been done in 14 years. The girls didn’t get down when the game got close; instead, they executed on both ends of the floor for the victory. We also hit our free throws when the game was close and that allowed us to extend the lead.

I can’t say enough how proud I am of these girls and this team. This was one of our goals and now we are on to the Regional Tournament.

The Lady Wolves begin Regional Tournament play on Thursday when they take on the Glenrock Herders in Torrington at 10:30 a.m. Come out and support your Moorcroft Wolves!
