MHS welcomes new principal

Moorcroft High School welcomes Principal Kirby Baier to the neighborhood. Baier has worked in education as a teacher, coach and administrator for around 16 years and has actually worked in Crook County as principal of the Hulett High School from 2007 until 2012.

“My first assignment was in Custer, SD,” Baier remembers, “As a math and science teacher, where I taught for three years.” He has also coached wrestling, football and track over the years.

The new MHS principal went on to receive his master’s degree in Administrative Education before working as principal in Buffalo, SD for four years followed by Hulett and later, Wright.

Concerning his plans for the future of MHS, Baier stated, “I’m really excited to start the new year, even though it’s challenging times. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure kids stay in school and that means following the guidelines and working with the health department and county and [Superintendent Mark]Broderson.”

The principal wants young people to remain in the brick and mortar school: “Kids will learn way more in school than they will remotely; that was proven last spring.”

Baier advocates “a positive school environment,” ensuring cooperation among the teachers, administration and staff.

“We can’t be a great team unless we’re all working together,” he says. “My first goal is to create that culture. I think it will be a little more difficult because of the trying times, but when there are challenges, people step up to the plate and I think we’ll be more likely to work together in situations like this. We have to, we don’t have a choice.”

Baier plans to foster all of the extra-curricular activities, “I think that is what makes kids grow as individuals. The trials and tribulations learned in sporting events, drama or debate is what makes you a solid person later.”

Baier’s wife works in a dentist’s office in Belle Fourche, SD. The couple has two grown sons.
