Lady Wolves win at home

On Friday, Moorcroft played host to the Powder River Conference Tournament. The Lady Wolves’ first opponent of the day was the Kaycee Lady Bucs.

Neither team could get much going in the opening minutes of the game, but the Wolves were able to find success in their half court defense and took a 33-23 lead into the half. The third quarter was really where the Wolves were able to extend their lead and it started on the defensive end.

The team scored 19 points in the quarter while holding the Lady Bucs to five points. The Lady Wolves won the contest, 64-48.

The game was definitely won on the defensive end. We were able to get the stops that we needed and then converted on the other end.

The second game of the day for the Lady Wolves found them against a familiar opponent in the Wright Panthers. The girls jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Panthers 22-6.

The Lady Wolves won the game, 62-24. Again, I thought we played good defense and had good energy.

The concern with playing two games in one day is how we come out energy-wise. Our energy was really good and our conditioning helped get us through, as well.

The Lady Wolves’ only game on Saturday found them against the Campbell County Camels junior varsity team from Gillette and we knew going in that we would have to have to be ready to go for the 9 a.m. game. It is challenging to play the late game on Friday and then turn around and play the first game on Saturday, but I thought our players were ready to go when the game tipped off.

The Camels jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead before the Lady Wolves responded with their own run. It was much of the same in the second quarter and the girls took a 47-35 lead into the half.

The Wolves didn’t come out as strongly as they would have liked in the third quarter and the Camels were able to cut into the lead, but Moorcroft turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter and won the game, 80-66.

I thought our conditioning was really a key to this game. We were able to do what we needed to do on the defensive end from a full court standpoint and then get out into our transition game and attacked the basket.

Overall, it was a good weekend for us. We were able to get back at it following the Christmas break and start implementing the things we had been doing in practice.

The Lady Wolves return to action on Tuesday, when they begin the West River Tournament in Newell, SD. Tip off on Tuesday is at 6 p.m.

Come out and support your Moorcroft Wolves!
