Pine Haven fire department offers safety valves for oxygen users

Fire department engineer Ed Scott has been working with Wyoming fire marshal Jim Reed to initiate, within the Pine Haven community, a program to aid in the prevention of home oxygen fires for people who live with the concentrators and tanks.

According to Pine Haven Volunteer Fire Chief TJ Gideon, the state fire marshal’s office provided the town free devices for users. “We’ll do that, as we see the need for it. It’s a pretty cool project. Basically, we put a check-valve in their oxygen machine,” he said.

The number of user associated deaths in the United States is high, due to the use of open flame cooking and smoking around medical oxygen, Gideon stated, “I don’t have the numbers, but the statistics are crazy, a lot of people are killed by that.”

These small, yet effective check valves are free to both the department and the homeowner. Gideon advises any Pine Haven resident who lives with medical oxygen to contact Town Hall for further information.
