Looking for a little light

The turn into Pine Haven proper from Highway 113 (Old Sundance Road) has always been without illumination after dark and community leaders have been considering ways to correct this problem.

"It's so dark," Councilwoman Emily Smith voiced at a recent workshop, "And very concerning out there...It is a priority...if there's nothing holding us back, we should do that."

The state refuses to allow any signage or lights on their right-of-way, leaving the town's benefactor, Keyhole Ranch owners Vince and mother Vanna Waters, to allow further work on ranch property for this endeavor.

According to Mayor Karla Brandenburg, "The only thing holding us back is getting permission from Waters." She has subsequently talked with Vince and he is discussing the situation with other family members concerned.

The actual lights have been purchased and the council has discussed where they would like to see them raised. While a few considered the existing Pine Haven sign a good option for support, that sign is not sturdy enough for the weight of the lights.

Many, though, would like to see illumination on both sides of Pine Haven Road at that intersection if the property owners sanction it.

"At least," the mayor shared her reasoning, "When you're driving from both sides, you'll have lights; you'll be able to see the turn."

Public Works Director Sunny Schell recently mentioned to council members several surplus iron pipe sections stored at the maintenance shop that will work as part of a support system for the lights wherever they are eventually installed. This installation would include the use of concrete.

The council has asked Schell to contact Powder River Energy for the use of one of their bucket trucks to raise the lights if consent is given by Keyhole Ranch for this work.
