Julie Cox of Pine Haven has been sentenced in District Court on two sets of charges: possession of marijuana following her arrest in September, 2022; and violating the terms of her probation associated with possession charges in 2018, for which she was given a suspended sentence.
In the 2018 case, Cox was pulled over for failure to observe a stop sign with marijuana present in her vehicle. She was found guilty on one count of possession, third or subsequent offense, and sentenced to between two years and 60 months in jail.
The sentence was suspended pending successful completion of five years of probation.
In the 2022 case, THC was found in Cox’s residence when a Crook County Sheriff’s deputy made contact in reference to a warrant for her arrest.
On September 28, 2022, the deputy was sent to Cox’s residence in reference to a wanted person and entered the residence to assist with gathering the medications she needed. A purse was allegedly sitting on the bed in plain view containing a dispensary container bearing a THC warning label.
According to the deputy, a clear container of marijuana was next to the purse.
As Cox was on probation/parole and subject to bond conditions, having recently been released from the Campbell County jail, she was subject to warrantless searches if officers have reasonable suspicion.
The deputy performed a search and allegedly found further items related to the use of controlled substances, including dispensary packages and pipes. The substance found during the search later returned a presumptive positive for THC.
When Cox appeared in front of Judge Matthew F.G. Castano for sentencing in both cases, she admitted to violating her probation on January 18, 2023.
On the more recent charges, Cox pleaded guilty to two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, third or subsequent offense, with five prior known convictions since 1993 in California, Campbell County, Sheridan County and Crook County.
On both counts, Judge Castano sentenced her to between three and five years of incarceration and a $100 fine.
Regarding the revocation of probation, Judge Castano reimposed the underlying sentence of incarceration for between 24 and 60 months.
All three sentences will run concurrently. They will also run concurrently with Cox’s sentence in a separate case from Campbell County District Court.
