Friday, August 9 is National Book Lovers Day! Book Lovers Day is recognized on a global scale, however the origin of this unofficial holiday is unknown.
The day’s origins may be unknown, but the history of books is not. Here are a few fun facts that may interest you whether you are a bibliophile or not:
Bibliophile: A person who has a great appreciation for books and/or a book collector; books were designed to make writings and drawings portable as most were carved on stone tablets. The first books were on parchment or vellum (calf skin) and bound with wooden covers that had been wrapped in leather.
Binding books in human skin (anthropodermic bibliopegy) peaked in the 19th century. This rare phenomenon was most popular among doctors and has been studied by the Anthropodermic Book Project.
Public libraries often chained books to shelves or desks to prevent theft; the most expensive book is Codex Leicester, by Leonarda Da Vinci, and was sold to Bill Gates for $30.8 million in 1994; the Largest Book is This the Prophet Muhamed and is located in Dubai, it weighs around 3306 pounds and measures 16.4 feet by 26.44 feet; the smallest book is Teeny Ted From Turnip Town, it measures only 0.07mm by 0.10mm and was etched using an ion beam.
In a digital world of ebooks and audio books, we often forget how nice it is to pick up a physical book and get lost in the pages. There won’t be any phone calls, text messages or other notifications popping up in the middle of your story. Stop by the library to check out a book today!
