Lady Wolves bring home Regional championship

The Lady Wolves traveled to Pine Bluffs for the 2A East Regional Tournament on Thursday. Their first opponent was the Lady Rams from Big Horn.

Big Horn played with the Wolves in the first half and the Wolves found themselves ahead 23-14 going into the half. They really tried to slow us down in that first half and changed some things they had done during the regular season. We made some adjustments in the second half and it helped to get our defense where we needed it to be and that led to good offense.

The Lady Wolves outscored Big Horn, 29-9 for the 52-23 victory. It was good to get the first round game under our belt and to move into the semi finals.

In the semi finals, the Lady Wolves found themselves against the Glenrock Herders. We knew going into the game that we were going to have to really step it up on the defensive end. They have some good posts and they like to do what they can to get them going.

The Lady Wolves came out of the gate strong and shooting it well and were able to take a 40-10 lead into the half. The second half was closer, but the Wolves got the stops when they needed to and secured the 54-27 victory.

We really shot it well in the game and that came from good ball movement and getting open shots. We were able to get the other team's defense working and moving and that allowed us to get good looks.

The championship game saw the Lady Wolves facing a familiar opponent in the Sundance Bulldogs. It was the third time playing them this season so we were familiar with them and they with us.

We knew it was going to be a tough game and we would need to do the little things to have an opportunity. The pace of play was slower than we normally like to play, but we were able to get some looks that allowed us scoring opportunities.

The first quarter ended with the Lady Wolves having a slim 10-6 lead. The second quarter was more of the same with good defense.

Going into the half, the Lady Wolves were ahead, 20-10. The third and fourth quarters were similar, but the Lady Wolves were able to get key baskets and stepped it up on the defensive end for the 36-23 victory and their first 2A East Regional Championship since 1980.

It was a good three days for the girls. I thought we really committed to getting it done on the defensive end and that is what they did.

When we were able to get the defensive stops, we were then able to get to the offensive end and find the shots we wanted to shoot and were able to convert. This is a great group of girls to be around and they show up every day of practice and work. They understand what we are trying to do and why we need to do it.

The Lady Wolves will now go into the State Basketball Tournament where they will play their first round game on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. against the St. Stephens Lady Eagles. Come out and support your Moorcroft Wolves!
