Moorcroft welcomes new police officer

Trayton Dawson has chosen to begin his career in law enforcement with the Moorcroft Police Department.

"I've always wanted to be a cop; it's always been a dream of mine," he says.

"I was working out at Quality Agg and Construction and helping with wrestling practice and Cory [Allison] told me that there was a position opening and I should apply so I did."

Dawson is a native of Newcastle and has lived in Moorcroft for about five years with wife Hailie. "We got married last July," he says.

The officer said that his family is "super excited" about his chosen vocation and that his wife isn't too fearful, "She understands the risks and we're taking it one day at a time." His mother, he admits, may be a bit apprehensive.

"I hope to get to know the community real well," Dawson speaks to what he wants to accomplish during his time with this department, "And to be known as a good person and an honorable man."

He does not anticipate remaining in Moorcroft throughout his career.

"Hailie doesn't want to live here forever, she doesn't like the cold weather, but I would say that, for the next five years, I will be here," he says.

Dawson looks forward to maturing into the position in Moorcroft before seeking opportunities that could allow him to reach for the position of detective, because, "That would be super interesting."

Dawson was officially hired by the council at the May meeting of the governing body and has been in uniform since then. He is currently riding with department veterans, Police Chief Bill Bryant and Officer Nick Curly as part of his field training.

"I ride passenger for the first month, then I start driving," he says.

He goes on to say, "I like everything I've been taught so far; I have two really good Field Training Officers helping me and teaching me the things I need to know and I am excited to learn more."

Dawson is scheduled for the academy in January, 2024.
