Wolves split games at Regionals

On Thursday, the Wolves boys basketball team traveled to Pine Bluffs, WY for Regional basketball. The Wolves took on the Tongue River Eagles in the first round late Thursday night.

The Eagles jumped out on top early and took a 16-7 lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Eagles scored often and took a 43-14 lead into halftime.

We struggled with their size and athleticism and didn’t play well defensively to keep ourselves in the game. In the second half, the Eagles cruised to a 71-36 win.

On Friday, the Wolves took on the Lusk Tigers in an elimination game. After the first quarter, the Wolves led, 10-4.

The teams traded baskets for most of the second quarter and Moorcroft led at halftime, 23-17. In the third quarter, we came out ready to play and widened our lead to 14 and took a 41-27 lead into the final quarter.

The Wolves hung on for the victory with a 53-44 final score. I thought we came out ready to play. We had a 19-point lead at one point and kind of let them get back in the game, but we finished strong and earned the right to play in the next game.

On Saturday, the Wolves took on the #1 ranked Pine Bluffs Hornets in a “win or go home” game. The Hornets have been ranked #1 all year and we knew we would have to put together our best game in order to go to state.

The Hornets jumped out early with an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and widened their lead to take a 37-19 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Hornets came out hot and hit four of their 13 threes made in this game and took a 59-28 lead going into the fourth.

The Wolves never gave up, but fell short in the end with a final score of 73-51. I thought we battled all game, but they were hitting their shots and made it tough for us to keep up with them.

Overall, we played 26 games this season and gained a lot of valuable experience. I thought the boys fought and worked really hard all season to improve.

We are a young basketball team and we only lose one senior from this year’s squad. I am very proud of these boys and their dedication to get better. Go Wolves!
