With many of us pulling out our fall jackets and turning the heater on, this week has brought the certainty of winter to the fore. As residents of Moorcroft and Pine Haven prepare for the coming season, so too do our municipal caretakers. Saturday saw wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour hit Moorcroft throughout the course of the day. Branches fell, taking out a number of private yard fences and blocking driveways, but, fortunately, no reports have been received of damage to residential roofs or vehicles. Funeral service for Lois Morgan was held September 26, 2019 at Gillette Memorial Chapel. Minister Randy Blakeman officiated; interment followed at Moorcroft Cemetery. Lois E. Blakeman Morgan passed away peacefully at her home on September 21, 2019 at the age of 77. She was born October 10, 1941 to Fred Robert and Frances Sophira (Roberts) Blakeman in Moorcroft, WY. On September 19, 2019, Jan Charles “JC” Houghton gained his place in heaven. JC enjoyed a full, happy life, despite the past several years of fighting Parkinson’s disease. Born in Smith Center, Kansas, on August 12, 1936, to Sidney and Lona Houghton, Jan was the oldest of four children. He grew up in Deadwood and Spearfish, South Dakota, graduating from Spearfish High School in 1953. Adelaida "Eda" Gose, 90, died peacefully in her sleep on September 26, 2019, at Weston County Health Services. Eda was born to Julius and Martha Frederiksen at home on the ranch near Horton, Wyoming, on October 11, 1928, the first of six children. She graduated from Newcastle High School in 1945 and attended Black Hills Teacher College, graduating in 1946. She started teaching in rural schools in fall of 1946. One killed in five-car crash LARAMIE (WNE) — The Wyoming Highway Patrol reported one person dead and expected U.S. Highway 230 to be closed for an several hours Monday afternoon after a five-vehicle crash occurred within a few hundred feet of where Lewis Road intersects the highway, close to the entrance of Harmony Elementary School. The Moorcroft Interfaith Community (MIC) announced that it offered a hand up to fifty individuals, including 22 adults and 28 children in the month of August and 53 individuals, (25 adults and 28 children) during the month of September through the MIC Food Pantry. The Lady Wolves came out on top over the weekend at the Lusk tournament. The Wolves were undefeated, winning all four matches. The first match up was against Upton, the Wolves won with the scores of (25-13, 25-15). They then played the home town of Lusk, winning (25-16, 25-11). The Wolves traveled to Newcastle this past Friday to compete against the Doggies. The pack struggled with some younger players getting some experience and the Doggies got the victory, 32-6. They never gave up, though and kept battling, getting an exciting touchdown from a blocked field goal by Parker Seeley who picked it up and ran it back. The Moorcroft Lady Wolves competed at the Rapid City Invitational Cross Country Meet at the Hart Ranch in Rapid City on Friday, September 27; competing in much cooler and wet weather. In the middle school eighth grade 3000 meter race, Mallory Jones ran in the time of 12:28.10, placing third out of 51. The Powder River Sewer Project has completed the water line replacement from Weston to Park Streets and will begin work on restoring the hard surface removed for the task when weather permits. Wyoming motorists who need permission to travel on closed sections of highways when conditions are safe may be eligible for faster approval into the state’s authorized travel program. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is streamlining its WYDOT Authorized Travel (WAT) program to allow faster approval for new and renewing Wyoming applicants under certain conditions.
